FINALS BOUND — GUNGAHLIN EAGLES MEN, WOMEN AND COLTS
The 2026 regular season is done, and three Gungahlin Eagles sides are into finals action across three separate competitions this weekend. The Men’s Premier side, the Women’s Premier XV and the ACT Vets Cup Colts have all secured semi-final spots, with all three fixtures set down for Viking Park.
Here’s how each side’s finals campaign shapes up.
MEN’S PREMIER — ELIMINATION SEMI FINAL vs CANBERRA ROYALS
The Eagles’ Premier side face the Canberra Royals in an Elimination Semi Final on Sunday 16 August, kicking off at 3:30pm at Viking Park. It’s a straight knockout: win and the Eagles progress in the BentSpoke John I Dent Cup finals series, lose and the season ends.
Gungahlin finished the regular season in fourth spot on the John I Dent Cup ladder, the last of the four finals berths, with seven wins from 15 matches for 47 competition points and a +19 points differential. It was a season of fine margins for the Premier side, but a strong bonus-point return of 15 shows a team that kept scoring even in defeat.
Form has been up and down heading into the finals. The Eagles won three of their last five outings, but the two losses either side — 33-31 to Canberra Royals on 25 July and 27-26 to Uni-North Owls on 1 August — were both decided by a converted try or less. The side steadied to close out the regular season with a 33-31 win over Queanbeyan Whites in Round 17, a result that carries some momentum into finals week.
The two teams have already met three times in 2026, and the head-to-head is about as even as it gets. Royals won the opening round encounter 42-38 in Woden back in April, before Gungahlin hit back with a 47-19 win at home on 30 May. Royals then completed the season series with a 33-31 win in the return fixture at Nicholls Enclosed on 25 July. With the series split 2-1 to the Royals and two of the three results decided by two points or fewer, Sunday’s Elimination Semi Final shapes as another arm wrestle.
ACT VETS CUP COLTS — QUALIFICATION SEMI FINAL vs TUGGERANONG VIKINGS
The ACT Vets Cup Colts face Tuggeranong Vikings in a Qualification Semi Final on Saturday 15 August, with kick-off at 11:00am at Viking Park.
The Colts enjoyed an outstanding regular season, finishing runners-up on the Colts ladder with nine wins from 12 matches, a +88 points differential and 47 competition points. Finishing second means a win on Saturday keeps the Eagles’ double chance alive heading toward the 29 August Grand Final.
Form could hardly be better: the Colts won their last four matches of the regular season, capped by a 21-14 win over Queanbeyan Whites Colts in Round 17.
Tuggeranong Vikings Colts were the benchmark side of the regular season, topping the ladder with 11 wins from 12 matches and an enormous +209 points differential.
The two sides have met three times already this season, and the trend is heading Gungahlin’s way. Tuggeranong won the first meeting 42-40 at Nicholls Enclosed in April, then backed it up with a 29-14 win at Viking Park on 4 July. But the Eagles responded in the reverse fixture a fortnight later, running out 42-24 winners at the same venue on 18 July — a statement win on the road against the competition’s benchmark side. Backing that up on Saturday would go a long way to securing a finals double chance.
WOMEN’S PREMIER XV — QUALIFICATION SEMI FINAL vs TUGGERANONG VIKINGS
The Women’s Premier XV take on Tuggeranong Vikings in a Qualification Semi Final on Saturday 15 August at 1:50pm at Viking Park. The Eagles finished the regular season on top of the ladder, securing the BentSpoke Premier 15s Minor Premiership with 11 wins from 12 matches — the only side to beat them all year was Tuggeranong, back in April, before Gungahlin won both subsequent meetings.
