Matt ‘Strawbs’ McGrory joins Eagles’ Board

Gungahlin Eagles President Eoghan O’Byrne is proud to announce that Matthew McGrory, or as he’s famously known ‘Strawbs’, joined the club’s Board last Wednesday 1st August 2018.

Matt is a homegrown Eagles product, having played 108 games for the club and manage the first-grade side for four straight seasons. His son, Mitch, is also a proud young Eagle who is sure to be a future star for the senior club.

Strawbs brings a wealth of experience to the board, with a lengthy background in well-known Canberra businesses as a project and contracts manager.

He will fill the role of Secretary, an important position in the club left vacant after Eagles life member Tim Power stepped away from the role earlier in the year after a very long stint. Tim and the rest of the Power family are still great contributors to the club, and his departure from an official role leaves large shoes to fill. President O’Byrne is confident Strawbs is more than capable of running a tight ship.

“We all know and love Strawbs as a passionate Eagle with a strong set of organisational skills,” O’Byrne says.

“Since 2015 we’ve gone from 94 registered players to 196 in 2018, and we still have the same number of volunteers – so having people like Strawbs in the secretary position will make a huge difference to how we operate internally as a club,” he added.

“The future of our club looks strong, and it only gains momentum when we bring people like Strawbs in to the right positions”.

Matt’s appointment now brings the board to eight members:

Eoghan O’Byrne (President)
Peter Johnson (Vice President)
Trevor Corver (Treasurer)
Matt McGrory (Secretary)
Tim Davis
Zak Davies
Damian O’Halloran
Linda Rummery
