Young Eagles inspired by great club people

Ahead of another rugby season, it’s important to reflect on why volunteers and players alike put in the countless hours to make community rugby thrive.

It doesn’t take long to remember some of the all-time greats of the club that make the Eagles’ colors, mascot, home ground and club song something truly special, and most importantly, something that is ours and only ours.

When asked what makes the club a great place to be, promising youngster Oscar Cunningham pointed out some decoration on the wall that summed up his answer nicely. The very honor board that contains the names of Life Members of the Gungahlin Eagles.

Cunningham says “At the end of the day, we all love playing footy. But the reason you love the club is because of the people that have built the history and culture, and that’s what makes us different to any other club”

“A few of us young guys have been here for a couple of years now, and we’re realising more and more that so many people have worn the jumper before we were even born, this is just our chance to represent it and add to the history, for the next person to come along and make it theirs,”

The Eagles were established over 50 years ago, and have survived some dark days thanks to the great contribution of particular individuals.

The 2003 first-grade premiership winning captain, current Board Member, Life Member, and former Club President Tim Davis couldn’t be happier with the current state of the club.

“To see close to 190 registered players last season, to have a functioning board who are passionate about the future of the club, and to see a group of men and women just going out and enjoying their footy means a great deal to us all,” Davis said.

“It’s satisfying to know the club is in good hands, we’ve got the right people in the right places and a strong group of sponsors that we are truly blessed to have”

Let’s hope that 2018 is a season of celebration with results on the park, which would be a tremendous credit to all those who contribute to the club, and have done for some time.

In the meantime, however, Eagles are asked to make special consideration for the sponsors and life members, who are extremely important to the foundation of our proud club.
