Red Squad in good hands with Matt Pyne
The Eagles are extremely lucky to have locked in Matt Pyne as the 3rd Grade Head Coach for the 2020 season.
The Eagles Red Squad (3rd and 4th Grade) coaching set up is looking strong with coaches Matt Pyne and Nick Hutchison delivering the program with the leadership of Director of Rugby Troy Atkins and club coach Marco Caputo.
Matt has joined the Eagles after a move down from Sydney for work and has a strong rugby background that is now delivering tremendous value to the club and our players.
Director of Rugby Troy Atkins says Pyne fits in perfectly with the coaching team and has done a great job of conducting enjoyable but challenging sessions for the 3rd and 4th grade combined squad.
Atkins says “Matt was a great find for the club. He understands how clubs operate with his coaching and management experience, and he’s got a strong understanding of the game too,”
“I think what the players are liking about Matt is that he’s ambitious for both 3s and 4s to have success, but you can tell his focus is on ensuring everyone enjoys training and playing,” he added.
Matt grew up in Townsville and played from 2004-2013, before moving to Sydney and continuing his playing career. He was employed at Rugby Australia for five years, The NSW Waratahs for three years, and was the General Manager at Gordon Rugby Club in 2015/16. He also coached the Fifth Grade side at Gordon Rugby Club in 2017.
Matt has been pleasantly surprised by the strong volunteer team at the Eagles, and is keen to build on an extremely successful 2019 for the Red Squad, which saw 3rd Grade win the ACTRU 1st Division 1st Grade premiership, and 4th Grade reach the semi-finals of the 1st Division 2nd Grade comp.
Matt says “I’ve really enjoyed my start at the Eagles, it’s been strange with the break but I’ve been made to feel really welcome,”
“A big surprise was turning up to see the plethora of volunteers at the club. I’ve never been anywhere where the players have their water bottles constantly being filled up (pre-COVID), volunteers setting up and packing away the fields, making sure the balls are always pumped,”
“The club is lucky to be loved by so many volunteers, and it’s a club with clear goals” he added.
Matt is setting his sights on strengthening the Red squad on and off the pitch.
He says “My main focus in 2020 is to create an environment where the Red Squad really look forward to training and game day with their mates and having a good time while dominating on the field,”
“Secondly, Hutch and I will work on creating a simple yet effective game strategy where we focus on our strengths, playing expansive footy, and target opponents weakness”
New and old players are always welcome to join Matt and the Red Squad at Training down at Nicholls Oval from 6pm.
